Motion Platform - 25 ton

An international movie production required a 2-axis motion platform capable of providing pitch and roll motion to a 25 ton vessel. The platform is used as a moving set to simulate the natural motions of the vessel and the actors' and props' reactions to the motions.
The motion range and rates were established and together with a mass representative model, the dynamic requirements of the platform were determined. The hydraulic power requirements and induced forces were calculated and the structure designed accordingly.
The motion platform was developed to provide 15 degrees of up and down pitch and simultaneous 20 degrees of roll to the 25 ton vessel. The rig was designed to assemble from transportable sections and allowed to be placed on an un-reinforced concrete floor with low loads transferred.
The rig was successfully used to provide motion to the rig during filming whilst supporting a crew in excess of 20 people as well as environmental effects.
